What is Silsila (The Chain) in Sufism?

Silsila

The Chain. Willayat or the Spiritual Domain is transfered from heart-to-heart (something like transplant of a body part) rather than normal college/university styled teaching. In the Silsila, it is defined that how many times the Willayat has been transfered and from whom. To express in simple words: 'A' transfered 'B' who transfered 'C' who transfered 'D' and so on. Silsila is only active when the chain is traceable and not broken. In Silsila the Chain starts from Prophet, Peace be upon Him, then the Willayat is transfered to the Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakr, Caliph Hazrat Uthman, and Caliph Hazrat Omer. (It is noted that Khilafat is the leadership, not the Willayat. These Caliphs are leaders as well as Walis). At that time, there was no need to give is name other than Islam. The reason is following:

When the Willayat reaches Caliph Hazrat Ali, it organizes from the crude form to more organized form. This is best explained that the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, is the Sun. It is not appropriate for the Moon to shine when the Sun is above, though beyond the blue sky of the day, Moon is shining but invisible to the ground. Only when the Sun of Prophethood sets, the Moon takes over. Now the Moon rules the night. But keep it in mind that 'the Light of Moon is not its own, it is taken from the Sun which is visible to Moon but not visible to ground'. Willayat is the Moon of the night which is directly taking its light from the Soul of Prophet, peace be upon Him. There cannot be any other parable which we can provide.

Later Caliph Hazrat Ali transfered it to his special pupil(s), and so on. It reaches at Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam who is Master of all Aulia, then it branches out. Now there are many Silsilas i.e., Qadria, Chishtia, Mulamatia, etc. Every Silsila must prove its chain linking to Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam, otherwise it will not be considered an official Silsila, and will always lack the Treasure of Willayat, though it may be teaching good things i.e., speak truth.

It is possible to become the candidate of Friend of God through guidance from the Master. For the steady ones, there is a potential to become the Saint. The word 'Potential' is the key to understanding to whole phenomenon. All efforts and strugles only increase the 'Potential' to become Wali, but 'becoming Wali' is not guaranteed due a reason. The Willayat is first initiated and wished by Allah Himself for a person, then circimstances change for that person. That is the luck, that is a gift, which is the highest possible power after Nabuwat in the cosmos.

Who is Wali Allah (Friend of God)?

The Saint. The Friend of God. With the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, the Nabuwat (Prophecy) was finsihed but God chooses some people out of Prophet's nation who spread the message of Islam. They are always present in every age. There are many pre-Islamic Wali Allahs as well who are also mentioned in Koran i.e., The People of the Cave; Al Khidhr; Luqman. Some of them are Mystics and Sufis, and some are Teachers of profound abilities of delevering Hadiths, Koran, and Fiq (Islamic Law). Normally this Sainthood or Willayat is transfered from heart-to-heart i.e., Teacher-pupil relationship. It cannot be learnt by reading Books and listening the Speeches. But, it does sometimes transfer in the presence of another Wali Allah, whose intension is enough to transfer the ocean of Waillayt into the heart. They are not just a normal human beings, but are of mystical potence. Some of them get the instructions directly from the Holy Soul of Prophet, Peace be upon Him. They are active even after their deaths. Read detailed artcile.

Topic: Is Tawassul and Waseela concept "Shirk" ?

[Note: We have extracted the following Q&A from a facebook group. We recommend you to read the whole response carefully...]

Dear All,

Assalaam U Alaikum,

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam,

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Please review the below article posted on one website. My brothers and myself have generated a very strong response which you can read below the article. Please pass on and share this knowledge so that we can save all those Muslims who call Waseela as “Shirk”. May Allah guide us to Siraat-ul-Mustaqim (Ameen).

The ARTICLE

I have been discussing the subject of using "waseela" while supplicating to Allah (swt) with some Muslims, and have come to know that there are quite different opinions about fact whether the use of "waseela" in duaa is halaal or haraam. Could you please provide me with some information about this subject, some ayaat from the Holy Qur'an or authentic ahaadeeth? With the term "use of waseela" I mean asking via the agency of someone, fx "I ask You (O Allah) to grant me forgiveness via the agency of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and his household)" or via the agency of other Prophets (Peace be upon them), saints or other pious Muslims.

Praise be to Allaah.

What is meant by tawassul and waseelah is four things:

the kind of tawassul without which faith cannot be complete, which is seeking to reach Allaah (tawassul) by believing in Him and His Messengers, and obeying Him and His Messenger, This is what is meant in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Do your duty to Allaah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach to Him…”

[al-Maa’idah 5:35]

This includes seeking to approach Allaah through His Names and Attributes, or by doing acts of obedience and worship by which one seeks to approach Allaah, and so on.

Seeking to approach Allaah by asking His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to make du’a’ for one during his lifetime, and the believers asking one another to make du’aa’ for one another. This follows on from the first type and is encouraged.

Seeking to approach Allaah by virtue of the status and virtues of some created being, such as saying, “O Allaah, I ask You by virtue of Your Prophet” and so on. This is allowed by some of the ‘ulama’, but this opinion is da’eef (weak). The correct view is that it is definitely haraam, because there can be no tawassul in du’aa’ except by virtue of the Names and Attributes of Allaah.

Tawassul as it is understood by many of the Muslims of later times, which is calling on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and seeking his help (or seeking the help of the dead and so-called awliya’). This is a form of major shirk, because calling on or seeking help from anyone other than Allaah with regard to something that that only Allaah is able to do is a kind of worship, and directing worship to anyone or anything other than Allaah is major shirk. And Allaah knows best.

Islam Q&A
Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

The RESPONSE

Thank you for giving the opportunity to remove your and anyone's confusion pertaining to the subject.

Firstly you need to understand the true definition of “shirk”. It means associating (shareek, shamil) someone or something with Allah while you worship Him. As long as you bow down to only Allah and acknowledge there is none but him to “worship”, there is no shirk. Asking for help to anyone is not shirk and why not is explained below.

1) For example : if you need monetary help urgently, you can start praying to Allah to throw a million at you. By all means Allah can do that, however, in its own practicality, you would do dua to Allah to solve your problems and ask friend to lend you money. Isnt borrowing that money asking for help from other than Allah. Therefore, help is from Allah, that friend is the tawassul.

2) For example : if you are sick, you can start praying to Allah for health and shifa. By all means Allah can do that, however, in its own practicality, you go to a hospital and believe in what a doctor is saying and take medications as prescribed. Isnt consulting doctor and having medicine accepting help from other than Allah. Therefore, health is from Allah, the doctor and worldly medicine is tawassul.

3) For example : Allah has commited to Muslims that food (rizk) will reach them in the quantity that HE has decided. The writer, in my view, should sit at home and wait for angels to spoon feed him, however, in its own praticality, one would work hard and earn his bread. Rizk and his salary is from Allah, however, his employer or his business is the tawassul.

These were day-to-day life examples for easy understanding, now lets refer to Quarn, Islamic history, and Hadith.

1) Refer to Surah in Para 29, Allah calls upon his helpers by using the terms “Ansarullah”. For sure Allah is capable of doing anything, why would he call upon people of Hazrat Isa Alaihis-salam for help of any kind. I am sure you, the writer and any muslim believes in every word of Quran.

2) Allah says in his own praise “In nAllah ala kulli shai in qadeer” meaning He can do what ever he wants. I totally believe HE sure can. However, have you ever wondered why Hazrat Jibrael’s Alaihis-salam serivces were required for the entire relevation of the Holy Quran which we all read.

3) If Allah wanted to spread Islam without human intervention, He would have killed the kuffars in less than a fraction of a second, however, he sent over numerous Prophets to spread his good word, to the last of his Prophets, the most beloved one, Prophet Muhammad, sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam.

4) More than 1400 years ago while Prophet Muhammad, sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam was facing difficulties in spreading Islam, his companions Sahaba-e-ikraam (radi Allah hu anhum ajmaeen) served their efforts, family, time, wealth, and even blood and life. Are you saying (MAZ ALLAH) Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam did shirk by taking help from his companions. By all means Allah could have helped his own religion, then why sent Prophets or their companions.

5) Next time you go to Madina, ask anyone for Masjid Gamama (the masjid of cloud). This Masjid is still preserved as much as other historic places since this Masjid has history. There was a time when due to water shortage crops and animals were dying. People of Madina gathered around Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam and requested Him to do dua. Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam raised his hands and just as he did dua, a cloud came over and poured rain. That is why it is called Masjid of cloud. It rained day and night for over one week when people again gathered to Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam to do dua again that rain should now stop. Now figure, Why did people approach the Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam rather than asking Allah and again appraoched to do dua for stop of rain.

Now Lets discuss doing dua via agency of Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam :-

1) Please refer to Surah Yusuf – Ayat 93 – it recalls that Hazrat Yaqoob alahis-salam was blind and Hazrat Yusuf alahis-salam his son offered his Kurta (shirt) to be placed upon his father’s eyes so that his eyesight would return. Read further to Ayat 96 – it says, Hazrat Yaqoob alaihis-salam got his eye sight back. They both were messengers, why didn’t they ask Allah ? The fact is, what ever happens, it happens by Will (izn) of Allah, however, through some or the other kind of an agency. Allah gave the eye sight back, however, Kurta (shirt) of Hazrat Yusuf alahis-salam was tawasul.

2) Now refer Surah Nisa – Ayat 64 – it is clearly mentioned that if an ummati (us) have done our sins then O Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam they should come to you and then ask for forgiveness from Allah and you My Rasool sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam recommend (shifa’at) for them, only then they will find Allah most merciful and acceptor of tauba. Allah has instructed to do tauba if one wishes to be forgiven, but open your eyes to the location Allah is asking you to come at, and also observe He awaits Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam for your recommendation more than your own tauba by making it a condition. Quran and its ayat are not limted or restricted to 1400 years ago, it is equally valid till today and one must believe that if any person heartily does tauba in front of Rehmat tul lil alameen sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam, insha Allah He would put forward recommendation for us as He loves his ummatis and He is Rehmat for all.

Coming to the point of seeking help of the dead :

1) Please undersatnd every Prophet alaihi-salam that came had his time and his people - till the next Prophet alahis-salam was sent to earth. , Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam is his last messenger and hence, the time we are in and our grandchildren will be till the day of Qayama is the time of our Phrophet , sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam. Therefore, HE is very much there.

2) It is stated in 2nd Chaper, Surah Baqara, Ayat 154, “Do not pronounce DEAD to the ones who die for Allah cause, They are alive, Yes you are unaware”. If this is clearly said in Quran about a normal person martyred in the battle field, then you have to pay extraordinary respect to the Holy Prophet Muhammad , sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam to be present amongst us as he was before. He is most beloved, the best of all, the most respected, and called by Allah as “Rehmatul lil alameen” as Allah’s rehmat to this world (which we know) and anything even beyond that (which we not know). I guess the writer's beliefe is simply based on fundamental of logic and science, whereas, I think he has to think outside the scientific box.

3) It is stated in Hadith that 70,000 angels visit Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam home in the morning and 70,000 angels in the evening to say Salam. This is the love and respect Allah the creator of all expresses to his beloved Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam. Please use your sense, no one says salam to someone who may be dead. Secondly, replying salam is wajib as taught by Prophet Muhammad sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam himself, hence, if anyone who says salam to him, is replied back by salam from Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam.

4) Whether one believes in tawassul or not, he would believe in the day of mairaj. History, HAdiths, and books say that while Prophet Muhammad , sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam was travelling He saw Hazrat Musa alaihis-salam in his grace performing salah. If Hazrat Musa alaihis salam (maz Allah) isnt alive, then who did Prophet Muhammad , sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam see? If writer is denying this fact, he is denying the Holy Prophet, sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasallam.

5) No one dies. Death is an action by which we humans relate our tenure in world from birth till death. We all know and believe we will face a life after death and be punished or rewarded for our deeds done in the world. If we are really dead, how will we enjoy the reward or feel the punishment.

Last but not the least, regarding the ayat the writer has stated, it says “seek the means to approach him” , therefore, why not making Allah’s most beloved Prophet sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam as the mean, since He is the best of the best in the world.

Based on my findings above, please think. To call them dead or call Shirk, is totally against the teaching. Please do your research and if you want, I can furnish you with more information and use your findings to find the right path.

To conclude : According to the writer if asking help is shirk, then probably, he is doing shirk 24/7 with his friends, doctor, office collegues, wife, siblings, family members etc, and anyone who helps him or does him a favor.

Allah apnay pyaray Rasool sal-lul-la-ho-alaihi-wasal
lam ke waseelay se hum sab ki magfirat farmaye. Ameen

Hazrat Syed Ghulam Haider Shah, Jallalpur Shareef

Hazrat Syed Ghulam Haider Shah - (1838-1908)

Hazrat Syed Ghulam Haider Shah (1838-1908), a renowned sufi, contributed a lot to the spread of Islam and to develop a through and deep belief on its teachings. Al-though century has passed yet his principles, teachings and attitude towards life is providing guidance to large number of masses, all over the world. His impressive religious personality has turned jalalpur Shareef into a symbol of light and inspiration.

BIRTH and Early Life:

In the Year in 1838, Hazrat Syed Ghulam Haider Shah was born in a beautiful hilly town, Jalapur Shareef, situated on the western bank of River Jehlum, near Kahwera saltmines in district Jehlum.

The grand father (Syed Sakhi Shah) and father (Syed Juma Shah) of Syed Ghulam Haider Shah have been renowned for their steadfastness and trustworthiness in the region.

His mother, from a Syed family of Khewah (Gujrat), had been very pious, a resolute lady and very considerate towards poor and needy ones.

Since his childhood Syed Ghulam Haider Shah had decent habits, clear thinking and complete faith and confidence in the supremacy and authority of Allah.

Learned Holy Quran from Mian Khan and his uncle Hzrt Syed Imam Shah. Among other teachers were Mian Mohammad Kamil and Mufti Ghulam Mohaiuddin, who were distinguished scholars in the region at that time.

As he reached his youth, Allah blessed him with strong and healthy built. He had fair wheatish complexion and attractive black eyes, full of confidence and conviction. His father used to impress upon him to lead a life with chastity. He honoured father’s advice and through out his life, avoided even minor touch with anyna-mahram lady.

Marriage:

He got married at the age of sixteen. After two years he had to witness the bereavement of his father, who was at the same time a spiritual tutor and with whom he was deeply attached. Before the demise, his father instructed and advised him, “Lead simple, chaste and respectable life. Always remember the Supreme Authority, Allah and Sunnah (practice and preaching of holy prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) should be the conduct of life. Be-caring and considerate to relatives and also towards needy and poor. Be respectful to elders and loving and caring towards younger. Most visit every day, the shrine of Hzrt Syed Meer Shakir Shah commonly known as Syed Miran Shakir for spiritual guidance and strength”.

Hazrat Syed Miran Shakir, whose shrine is about three miles up-hills from Jallalpur Shareef, is the eldest son of well known Hazrat Syed Shah Muhammad Ghaus, who is buried in Lahore between Akbari and Dilli Gate.
The obedient son acted according to the will of his father. He led simple, contented and pious life according to the guide lines set by the Holy Quran and Sunnah. He strived to gain know ledge and be beneficial for people. Because of his generosity he is remembered as Gharib-Nawaz (generous to poor). Despite his own early moderate economic conditions, he used to give alms to any beggar visiting his doorstep and helped the travelers and needy ones, irrespective of their religion or creed.

Silsilah-e-bait:

Syed Ghulam Haider Shah mostly used to spend evenings and occasionally nights at Hazrat Miran Shakir’s shine that used to be deserted at nights. One night the heard a voice, instructing him to see Syed Ghulam Shah of a nearby town Haranpur for silsilah-e-bait (spiritual link). When he met Syed Ghulam Shah Haranpuri, he said,” Your bait is not easy for me, I will lead you to Hazrat Khawajah Shamsuddin Sialvi (a well-known Sufi and religious scholar of his times)”.

As both of them reached Sial Shareef, a town in district Jhang, Syed Ghulam Shah Haranpuri introduced him to Hazrat Khawaja Shamsuddin Sialvi, “He is a Syed from Jalalpur and is desirous of bait”. Khawajah Shamsuddin Sialvi, as if waiting for such a pious, devout and capable figure, welcomed him and entered him to silsilah-e-bait. This bait resulted in his spiritual growth and uplift. Gharib Nawaz developed too much attachment and attraction for his Murshid (Spiritual guide) Khawajah shamsuddin Sialvi and used to visit to Sial Shareef, he was awarded Khilafat and permission to accept hait from any follower. He also studied books of Sufism, e.g., Muraqa Shareef Kashkaol, etc. from his Murshid.

The virtues, purity and piousness of Syed Ghulam Haider Shah earned great respect from Khwajah Silavi, who used to instruct a number of salikeen and mureedain to go and seek bait of Syed Ghulam Haider Shah, Jalalpuri instead of his own. He used in his bait and that of Syed Jalalpuri’s bait.

His Life Routines:

Gharib-Nawaz Syed Ghulam Haider Shah, used to spend most of his time remembering Allah, offering prayers, even not missing nowafils (Non-obligatory worship), acquiring knowledge, study of sufi literature and guiding and helping visitors. At the same time he was very attentive towards the welfare and betterment of his family, followers and other matters of daily life. He maintained Langar (free meals for followers, travelers and needy ones). He used to keep himself abreast of political situation of the country and about the international affairs. He was very nervous over the deteriorating political conditions of Muslims in general and riots of 1907 in Bengal and Punjab. In Islam there is no Rehbaniyat, thereafter participated both in religious as well as in worldly activities. Every worldly deed becomes a religious activity when it is performed according to guide lines and teachings of Islam and remembering and fearing Almighty Allah all the times.

Gharib-Nawaz Syed Ghulam Haider Shah led simple, clean and graceful life. He was very generous and consistent in his commitments. He used to preach and practice love for Allah, His Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), Murshid and mankind and regarded it as a part of faith. He desired his family and followers to be pious, cooperative, knowledge and prolific. He hardly used to become angry with any one. He was always a well wisher and never wished bad for anyone. Almighty Allah, the Merciful, mostly rewarded whenever he prayed for the betterment of any one, who visited him and requested for pray. Hazrat Syed Mehr Ali Shah Golarvi was peer-bhai (brother in spiritual order) and contemporary of Syed Ghulam Haider Shah. Both had great respect and regard for each other and worked jointly for the cause of Islam.

Wissal:

In 1905, Hazrat Syed Ghulam Haider Shah, handed over Khilafat to his Younger son Hazrat Syed Muzaffar Ali Shah and advised to help and guide people, continue Langar Shareef and contribute in construction of facilities for the visitors and followers.

On afternoon of the 5th July 1908 (5th Jamadi-us-Sani, 1326 Hijra), following minor temperature he passed away for heavens. Malik Muhammad Din had written the biography, “Ziker-e-Habib” of Syed Ghulam Haider Shah. Many scholars and learned people expressed sorrow and grief by written articles, poems and verses. Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal, also wrote quatrain indicating his high stature and date of expiry in Persian.

It translates as, “Every one who visits the grave of peer Haider Shah, described it as the glory of Koh-e-Toor (where Allah manifested His glory to Prophet Moses).

An angel descended, from heaven and kissed his grave, when asked about his year to expiry, the angle replied, Maghfoor, (meaning pardoned and exonerated one; the digit sum of the letters of Maghfoor is 1326, the year according to the lunar calendar).

After Syed Muzaffar Shah, his son, Hazrat Abdul Barkat Syed Muhammad Fazal Shah, graced dargah Jallalpur Shareef. He was a great spiritual as well as a religious leader and activity participated in the movements for independence of Pakistan and Kashmir. The volunteers of his Jamaat Hizbullah, fought and struggled to liberate Azad jamun Kashmir from Indian atrocities.

These days Hazrat Syed Anis Haider, the grand son of Syed Muhammad Fazal Shah, is the spiritual leader and Sajjada Nasheen of Jallahpur Shareef. His brother Hazrat Syed Tanveer Haider is also foreign qualified. Both are looking after all the affairs of Jallalpur Shareef jointly.

Sheikh Amin Bin Abdur Rehman

Qutab-ul-Aqtab (The Light-house of the light-houses) Hazrat Hafiz Sheikh Muhammad Amin Bin Abdul Rehman Al-Madni lived in Madina, Saudi Arabia, for sixty years. He was Imam at Masjid An-Noor for thirty years. He came to Pakistan in the late '80s and lived in Karachi for 12 years. Later on, he migrated to Multan (Madinat-ul-Aulia) around 1995. He resides in the Hujra-381, New Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony. He is one of the Noblest saints of this time. He belongs to Idrisi Silsila whose roots are found in Northern Africa and Arabia. This saint has introduced the Idrisi Tareeqah in Pakistan [1].

He has established meeting-centers for Silent Zikr (Zikr-e-Khafi) in all cities of Pakistan. As a tradition of all Aulia Karam, he is capable of inducing the most intense love for the Last Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) in his followers [2].

He asks his followers to always remain busy in sending blessings to the Messenger (silent recitation of Darood). The love of the Prophet of Islam is the basis of this silsila.

Tassawuf is mostly about subjective realities, an understanding of which requires a change of perception - a softening of heart. It is all about heart-to-heart matters and that is why it demands silence. Shaikh Amin provides a link to the sea of Allah's Anwaar (Enlightenment) and Tajalliyaat (special blessings) in the spirit of the Prophet of Islam that can only be experienced first-hand by creating a spiritual affinity with him.

Idrisia Tareeqa is a spiritual lineage linked to the Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad. This spiritual lineage is famous in Egypt, Sudan and Arabia.

Notes:

[1] Tareeqah or Tassawuf deals in those dimensions of reality where space and time does not really matter, therefore, if someone criticizes on the root location of Silsila i.e., Africa, he or she does not know how Tareeqah works at all.

[2] We must keep in mind that triggering the Ishq-e-Mustaffa, or, Love of the Prophet, Peace be upon Him, is not a self-directed and personal journey. For awakening of this Ishq, one must contact those whose Ishq-e-Mustafa has already awaken. It is exactly like the candle which cannot be lit without the other burning candle. They are those whose attention (or Nigah) is capable of initiating this Ishq in a pupil. This becomes a chain, or Silsila which traces directly to The Prophet, Peace be upon Him. Therefore, without the help of a Wali of the time, you can be muslim, but you can never be a Momin. Faith is also not self-attained treasure, it is gifted by those who already have the gift of Faith in their hearts.

THE PEDIGREE OF AHMAD BIN IDRIS

THE PROPHET

FATIMAH = ALI IBN ABI TALIB --> al-Hasan (d. 49/699-70)--> al-Hasan -->Abd Allah, al-kaamil, al-mahd --> Idris, the founder of Idrisi dynasty in Fez (d 175/ 791) --> Idris (d. 213/828) -->
Muhammad (d. 221/836) --> Ali Haydara --> Ahmed Mizwar --> Isa --> Hurma --> Ali --> Abu Bakr

-> Mashish -> Yamlah -> Muhammad -> Abd al-Jabbar -> Ahmad -> Umar -> Ibrahim -> Abd Allah -> Muhammad -> Ahmad -> Ali -> Muhammad -> Idris -> Ahmad al-Mashishi al-Yamlahi al-Hasani.

Hazrat Ahmad Bin Idris, the Moroccan mystic and teacher, is one of the seminal figures of Islam in the nineteenth century. Through his preachings, prayers and litanies, his students and their students, he has exercised an enduring influence that stretches from North Africa east to Malaysia and Indonesia, north to Southern Yugoslavia and Istanbul and south along the East African coast. In North East Africa, his influence was specially profound through such students as Muhammad b. Ali al Sanusi, Muhammad Uthman Al-Mirghani and Ibrahim al-Rashid. Two states of the region, Libya and Somalia, are at least in part of creations of the traditions associated with him. In the Sudan, the brotherhood, the Khatmiyya, established by al-Mirghani continues to play a major role in the politics of divided country.

''Muhammad Ameen bin Abd-ur-Rahman'' ''Qutab-ul-Aqtaab" is a Sufi Shaikh. In the past, he spent most of his time in Madina Saudi Arabia, and he is now based in Multan, a city in southern Punjab Pakistan. The number of his followers is in millions. He Resides at Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony in New Multan(Multan). He belongs to the Idreesia (also spelt Idrissia) order of Sufism which originated in North Africa and the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt) as compared with the Iranian-Indian orders and stems of Sufism which have been traditionally popular in Pakistan. He is The Sheikh of the Time Now for Muslims. Shaikh Ameen's methods of initiating followers into his Sufi discipline include the Love for God & Love for his Prophet Muhammad through Zikr / Darood Khafi or silent recital. Idrissia is mostly spelled as Idrisia in Modren Western Literature. Imam Ahmad Idrisi [real name Ahmad Ibn Idris Al-Fasi] was the founder of this sufi order. The spiritual authority of Idrisia is mainly deriven through well recorded narration from Imam Idris where he was given Awrad (sufi chantings) by Khidhar (a legenadry personality in Abrahamic Religions) in the presence of Muhammad {SalAllaho Alaihi waSallam}. It is also narrated, in the same spiritual encounter, that Muhammad {SalAllaho Alaihi waSallam} became the Direct Guardian of Idrisi Sufi Tradition. Sheikh Amin Bin Abdurr Rehman attained his spiritual training various Mashiakh (Sufi Masters) including Qadriyya and Naqsh Bandia but settled for an Idrisi Shiekh in Yemen. He spent later part of his youth in Modern Saudia, specifically Hijaz. He migrated to Pakistan after political instability in Saudia in late 1970s. He has a sizeable number of followers.

The Story of Hazrat Ghazi Ilm Deen Shaheed

The 1920’s in India witnessed the publishing of an inflammatory book vilifying Prophet Muhammad (SAW) thereby adding fuel to the existing Muslim/Hindu tensions. The British Raj ruled India and the creation of Pakistan was still a distant dream in the hearts of the Indian Muslims. The Muslim population was understandably incensed and mass protests were held. Prashaad Prataab had authored Rangeela Rasool (The Colourful Prophet), under the pen name of Pandit Chamupati Lal. The word rangeela means ‘colourful’ but can be understood in this context to mean ‘playboy’.

Rajpal was a Hindu book publisher from Lahore. He took the responsibility of publishing the book in 1923 and pledged not to disclose the author’s real name. Pressure from the Muslim community resulted in the matter being taken to Session court Lahore which found Raj Pal guilty and sentenced him. Subsequently Rajpal appealed against the decision of Session Court in the Lahore High court. The appeal was heard by Judge Daleep Singh who gave leave to appeal on the grounds that on the basis of criticism against the religious leaders, no matter how immoral it is, is not covered by S.153 of the Indian Penal Code. Thus Rajpal could not be sentenced as law did not cover blasphemous criticism against religion. The High Court decision was widely criticised and protests were made against it by Muslims of India. Little did anyone suspect that one young man’s course of action would bring about a significant change in the Law, ensuring that Islam would be covered by blasphemy laws.

Ilm Din was an illiterate teenager from Lahore. His father was a carpenter. One day he was passing near Masjid (mosque) Wazir Khan. There was a huge crowd shouting slogans against Rajpal. The speaker thundered: "Oh Muslims! The devil Rajpal has sought to dishonour our beloved Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) by his filthy book!”

Ilm Din was deeply affected by this passionate speech and vowed to take action. On 6th September 1929 Ilm Deen set out for the bazaar and purchased a dagger for one rupee. He hid the dagger in his pants and waited opposite Rajpal’s Shop. Rajpal had not arrived yet. His flight had arrived at Lahore airport and he proceeded to phone the police in order to request them to provide him security. Ilm Deen did not know what the publisher looked like. He asked a few passer-by’s as to Rajpal’s whereabouts and said that he needed to discuss something with him. Rajpal entered the shop without detection but soon after a man alerted Ilm Din that Rajpal was inside. The young man entered the shop, lunged forward and attacked him. He stabbed his dagger into the chest of Rajpal with such force that his heart was ripped from his body. Rajpal fell dead on the ground. Ilm Deen made no attempt to escape. Rajpal’s employees grabbed him and shouted for help.

The police arrived at the scene and arrested Ilm Deen. He was kept in Mianwali jail. The case went to court and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was his defence lawyer. Jinnah urged Ilm Din to enter a plea of not guilty plea and to say that he had acted due to extreme provocation. The fact that Ilm Din was only 19 years old would have also worked in his favour. Ilm Din refused to offer such a plea and insisted that he was proud of his actions. This case was the only one that Jinnah ever lost. The Session Court awarded Ilm Din the death penalty. Against his wishes, the Muslims lodged an appeal, but it was rejected.

Ilm Din's execution occurred on 31st October 1929. When asked if he had any last requests, he simply requested that he be allowed to pray two rak’at (units) nafl (voluntary) prayer, thus following the example of Khubaib (RA) who also prayed 2 rak’ats nafl before the pagan Quraish executed him.

As the noose was put around the neck of Ilm Din, he repeated before the huge crowd:
"O people! Bear witness that I killed Rajpal to defend our last Prophet Muhammed S.A.W, and today they are going to hang me. I am sacrificing my life whilst reciting the kalimah (shahadah - testimony of faith)."

The young man was killed and the authorities buried him without any Janazah (funeral) prayer being offered for him. Mass demonstrations broke out and there the tension between the Hindu and Muslim communities was palpable. The inhabitants of Lahore wanted Ilm Din’s body returned in order to give him an Islamic janaza (funeral). Two celebrated activists — the poet Dr. Muhammed Allama Iqbal and Mian Abdul Aziz — campaigned to have the body of Ilm Din returned to Lahore for the Janaza prayer. The British were worried that this would incite unrest. Only after Allama Iqbal gave his assurance to the British that no riots would erupt, was permission given.

When the body of Ilm Din was exhumed from its grave, it was found to be the intact without any change whatsoever. The kaffan (shroud) had not changed its colour. This occurred on 14th November 1929 — a full 15 days after the hanging. After a two-day journey, the body arrived in Lahore. 200,000 Muslims attended the funeral prayer which led by the Imam of masjid Wazeer Khan, Imam Muhammed Shamsuddeen. Mawlana Zafar Ali Khan said ahead of the burial: "Alas! If only if I had managed to attain such a blessed status!" Allama Iqbal carried the funeral bier along its final journey. As Iqbal placed the body of Ilm Din into the grave, he tearfully declared: "This uneducated young man has surpassed us, the educated ones."

The killing of Ilm Din had far-reaching repercussions. A provision was added to the Penal Code, making insult to the religious beliefs of any class an offense. Allama Iqbal’s proposal of a separate Muslim state in 1930 resulted in the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The Pakistan Penal Code makes it a crime for anyone who "by words or visible representation or by an imputation or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiled the name of the Muhammad". In 1982, President Zia ul-Haq introduced Section 295B to the Pakistan Penal Code punishing "defiling the Holy Qur'an" with life imprisonment. In 1986, Section 295C was introduced, mandating the death penalty for "use of derogatory remarks in respect of the Holy Prophet" in keeping Islam’s hudood (prescribed punishments). Ilm Din’s legacy is still visible across Pakistan, where parks, hospitals and roads carry his name.

Today if someone wants to enlight the Love for Prophet, Peace be upon Him, in himself, should visit the blessed mazar of Ghazi Ilm Deen, Rehmatullah, and drink the water which is situated near the feet of Qaber Shareef, and then recite Darood-e-Taj as many times as possible.
